In the Northland region, there are three main volcanic fields (Kaikohe-Bay of Islands; Puhipuhi and Whangarei) and several smaller localities where volcanic rocks are found. There has not been any volcanic activity for some time.
Volcanism began in the Northland area around 10 million years ago, with its most recent eruption between 43 and 75,000 years ago. The Northland landscape features remnants of lava flows and volcanic cones.
